Habsburg Monarchy

The composite Central European territories ruled by the Habsburg dynasty, conventionally dated from 1526 until the dynasty’s fall in 1918.

Personal union: A political arrangement in which separate states share a monarch while retaining distinct institutions. Habsburg rulers held multiple crowns without merging all their territories into one state.
Battle of Mohács: The 1526 battle in which Ottoman forces defeated the Kingdom of Hungary. The defeat opened a succession crisis that brought the Habsburgs claims to Hungary and Bohemia.
