Hacienda

A large landed estate in Latin America, historically associated with concentrated ownership and dependent labor. Haciendas often combined agricultural or livestock production with residences and supporting facilities.

Peonage: A labor system in which workers are bound to an employer or landowner by debt or other dependency. Debt and dependency could keep hacienda workers tied to an estate.
Spanish colonization of the Americas: The conquest and settlement of much of the Americas by Spain from the late fifteenth century onward. Spanish colonial rule reshaped landholding and labor systems across much of Latin America.
Land reform: Government measures that redistribute land or change the rules governing its ownership and use. Reform movements challenged concentrated hacienda ownership and sought broader access to land.
Hacienda in Mexico: A large Mexican estate, often combining agriculture or livestock production with residential and processing facilities. Mexican haciendas became prominent examples of estate production and land concentration.
Debt bondage: A form of forced labor in which a person works to repay a debt under coercive conditions. Advances and accumulated debts could restrict workers’ ability to leave.
Encomienda: A Spanish colonial grant of rights to Indigenous tribute and labor, formally paired with duties of protection and Christian instruction. It preceded and influenced colonial systems that extracted labor and produce.
Mexican Revolution: A revolution beginning in 1910 that transformed Mexico’s government and prompted major social and agrarian changes. Land redistribution became a central demand against large estates in Mexico.
Hacienda in Peru: A large Peruvian rural estate whose production and labor relations varied by region and period. Peruvian estates developed amid distinctive colonial institutions and Indigenous communities.
Latifundium: A very large agricultural estate, typically held by one owner or a small group. The hacienda was a Latin American form of large landed property.
Repartimiento: A colonial system that required Indigenous communities to provide rotating periods of labor to Spanish authorities or employers. Its labor drafts supplied workers to colonial enterprises, including estates.
