Hafez al-Assad

Hafez al-Assad was Syria’s president from 1971 until his death in 2000. He established an authoritarian system centered on the Ba’ath Party, the military, and his family.

Syrian Arab Ba'ath Party: A political party founded on Arab nationalism and socialism that governed Syria under Assad. Assad used the party to organize state institutions and present his rule as Ba’athist governance.
