Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia is a sixth-century monument in Istanbul, built under Byzantine emperor Justinian I as a cathedral. Its vast dome and later use as a mosque mark its distinctive architectural and religious history.

Byzantine architecture: The architectural tradition of the Byzantine Empire, known for domes, centralized plans, and richly decorated interiors. Hagia Sophia became its most influential surviving monument.
Justinian I: Byzantine emperor from 527 to 565 who sought to restore Roman power and strengthen imperial authority. He commissioned Hagia Sophia after the previous cathedral was destroyed during the Nika Revolt.
Eastern Orthodox Church: A communion of Christian churches that developed from the eastern traditions of the Roman Empire. Hagia Sophia served as Constantinople’s principal cathedral and patriarchal church.
Fall of Constantinople: The Ottoman capture of Constantinople on 29 May 1453, which ended the Byzantine Empire. The conquest ended Hagia Sophia’s role as a Byzantine cathedral and preceded its conversion into a mosque.
Basilica: A long rectangular building with a central nave and side aisles, used in ancient civic life and Christian worship. Hagia Sophia’s centralized domed space departs from the typical long basilica plan.
Pendentive: A curved triangular surface that transitions from a square bay to the circular base of a dome. Four pendentives carry the dome above Hagia Sophia’s square central space.
Anthemius of Tralles: A Greek mathematician and architect active in the sixth century. He co-designed Hagia Sophia with Isidore of Miletus for Justinian I.
Ottoman Empire: A state founded by Ottoman rulers that lasted from the late thirteenth century until 1922. Ottoman conquest brought Hagia Sophia into a new imperial and religious setting.
Hagia Sophia decree: A 2020 Turkish Council of State ruling that annulled Hagia Sophia’s museum status and enabled its use as a mosque. The ruling restored mosque status and renewed international debate over the monument’s heritage.
Pantheon: A Roman temple in Rome, rebuilt under Hadrian with a vast unreinforced concrete dome. Its dome offers a Roman precedent distinct from Hagia Sophia’s pendentive-supported design.
