Hair transplantation

Hair transplantation is surgery that moves hair follicles from a donor area, usually the scalp, to areas with hair loss. Transplanted follicles generally retain characteristics of their original location.

Follicular unit transplantation: A hair-restoration technique that removes a strip of scalp and divides it into follicular grafts for transplantation. This method supplies donor follicles in naturally occurring groups while leaving a linear donor-site scar.
Androgenetic alopecia: A patterned form of hair loss influenced by genetic susceptibility and androgen activity. It is a common reason for transplantation, while ongoing loss can affect the eventual pattern.
Minoxidil: A medication applied to the scalp or taken orally to promote hair growth in some forms of hair loss. Unlike transplantation, it treats existing follicles rather than relocating them.
Telogen effluvium: Temporary diffuse hair shedding that occurs when many follicles enter the resting phase of the hair cycle. Temporary shedding can follow surgery and should be distinguished from permanent graft loss.
Donor supply: The finite amount of suitable hair available for harvesting from a person's donor regions. Limited supply constrains coverage and density across current and future areas of loss.
Follicular unit extraction: A hair-restoration technique that removes individual follicular units directly from the donor area. It obtains grafts without removing a strip, changing the pattern of donor-site scarring.
Female pattern hair loss: A progressive form of scalp hair thinning in women, often affecting the crown and central part. Surgical suitability depends on the distribution of thinning and the available donor hair.
Finasteride: A medication that inhibits conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone and can slow male pattern hair loss. It can help limit ongoing loss, which surgery alone does not prevent.
Shock loss: Temporary or permanent shedding of nearby native hair after trauma, including hair-restoration surgery. Surgical stress may thin existing hair around recipient or donor sites.
Progressive hair loss: Hair loss that continues or expands over time. Native hair may keep receding around stable grafts, complicating long-term appearance.
