Hairy ball theorem

Every continuous tangent vector field on an even-dimensional sphere has at least one zero. In particular, a sphere cannot be combed flat without a cowlick.

Sphere: A sphere is the set of points at a fixed distance from a center in Euclidean space. The theorem concerns tangent fields on spheres of even dimension.
Degree of a continuous map: The degree of a map between oriented spaces of equal dimension is an integer measuring its signed covering count. A hypothetical nonvanishing field on a sphere would induce a map constrained by degree.
Henri Poincaré: Henri Poincaré was a French mathematician whose work helped establish algebraic topology and dynamical systems. His work on vector-field indices underlies a standard proof of the theorem.
