Hanafi school

The Hanafi school is a Sunni tradition of Islamic jurisprudence founded around the teachings of Abu Hanifa. It is known for its systematic use of legal reasoning and has shaped law across much of the Muslim world.

Qiyas: Analogical reasoning that extends a ruling from an established case to a new case sharing its effective cause. Hanafi jurists use analogy to derive rulings where foundational texts do not settle a case directly.
Abu Hanifa: An eighth-century jurist in Kufa whose teachings became the foundation of the Hanafi school. His legal opinions and teaching circle supplied the school's founding authority.
Ottoman law: The legal system of the Ottoman Empire, drawing on Islamic jurisprudence, sultanic legislation, and administrative practice. Hanafi doctrine served as the empire's principal Sunni legal framework.

Mughal Empire: A South Asian empire ruled by Muslim dynasties from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. Hanafi jurisprudence informed legal institutions under many Mughal rulers.
Shafi'i school: A Sunni school of Islamic jurisprudence founded by Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i. Al-Shafi'i's framework for legal sources differs from characteristic Hanafi methods.
Ijma: The agreement of qualified Muslim jurists, treated in Islamic jurisprudence as a source of legal authority. Consensus constrains the reasoning available to Hanafi jurists.
Abu Yusuf: An early Hanafi jurist and chief judge under the Abbasids who helped establish the school's legal authority. His writings and judicial office carried Hanafi doctrine into state administration.
