Hand spinning

Hand spinning is the craft of drawing out and twisting fibers by hand to make yarn, using tools such as a spindle or spinning wheel.

Drop spindle: A handheld tool that twists fibers into yarn while suspended or supported during spinning. Its rotating shaft and whorl provide a portable way to twist drafted fibers.
Textile fiber: A natural or manufactured filament or staple used to make yarn and fabric. Hand spinning transforms suitable fibers into continuous yarn.
Spindle (textile): A shaft used to twist fibers into yarn, sometimes weighted by a whorl. The spindle is among the oldest and most widespread tools for hand spinning.
Knitting: A textile-making method that forms fabric by interlocking loops of yarn. Hand-spun yarn is commonly shaped into knitted garments and objects.
Drafting (textile processing): The controlled drawing apart of fibers to form a strand of the desired thickness. Drafting meters fiber into the twist, controlling yarn thickness.
Wool: The fleece fiber of sheep and certain other animals, commonly used for textiles. Its scales and crimp help fibers cling together under twist.
Spindle whorl: A weighted disk fitted to a spindle to improve its rotation and maintain momentum. Archaeological whorls document the tools used in early hand spinning.
Weaving: A textile-making method that interlaces lengthwise and crosswise yarns on a loom. Hand spinning can supply the warp and weft yarns used in woven cloth.
Twist (textiles): The rotation that binds fibers together along a yarn's length. Twist gives drafted fibers cohesion and determines much of the yarn's strength and character.
Flax: A bast fiber from the stem of the flax plant, processed into linen yarn and fabric. Its long, smooth fibers require preparation and spinning methods distinct from wool.
