Hans Bethe

Hans Bethe was a German-American theoretical physicist whose work explained stellar energy production and advanced quantum mechanics and nuclear physics.

Nuclear fusion: A nuclear process in which light atomic nuclei combine to form heavier nuclei, releasing energy in many reactions. Fusion supplied the physical mechanism behind Bethe’s explanation of stellar energy.
Proton–proton chain: A sequence of nuclear reactions that converts hydrogen into helium and powers the Sun and other relatively cool stars. It is the dominant hydrogen-burning pathway in stars like the Sun.
University of Frankfurt: A public research university in Frankfurt, Germany, founded in 1914. Bethe studied physics there before completing his doctorate in Munich.

Edward Teller: A Hungarian-American theoretical physicist who helped develop the hydrogen bomb and advocated nuclear weapons research. Teller’s weapons advocacy often contrasted with Bethe’s later arms-control work.
Nuclear astrophysics: The study of nuclear reactions and nuclear matter in astronomical environments. His stellar-fusion calculations helped establish this field’s central research program.
