Hans Christian Andersen Award

The Hans Christian Andersen Award is an international honor recognizing a living author and illustrator for lasting contributions to children’s literature. Presented by the International Board on Books for Young People, it is often called the highest international recognition available to creators of children’s books.

International Board on Books for Young People: An international organization that promotes children’s access to books and supports children’s literature worldwide. IBBY created and administers the award.
International Board on Books for Young People national sections: IBBY’s member organizations in individual countries, which nominate candidates for its awards. National sections submit candidates for the author and illustrator medals.
Astrid Lindgren: A Swedish author of children’s books, including the Pippi Longstocking series. She received the inaugural author medal in 1958.
Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award: A Swedish international award recognizing authors, illustrators, storytellers, and reading-promotion work for children and young adults. Unlike the Andersen Award’s separate author and illustrator medals, it recognizes several kinds of contribution.
Jella Lepman: A German journalist and educator who founded the International Youth Library and helped establish IBBY. Her postwar work helped build the organization that later created the award.
Hans Christian Andersen Award jury: An international panel appointed by IBBY to assess nominees for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. The jury evaluates candidates’ complete bodies of work and selects medalists.
Maurice Sendak: An American author and illustrator best known for the picture book Where the Wild Things Are. He received the 1970 illustrator medal for his contribution to children’s books.
Carnegie Medal: A British annual award for an outstanding book written for children or young adults. It honors a particular book rather than a creator’s lifetime contribution.
International Youth Library: A Munich research library specializing in children’s and young adult literature from around the world. It grew from Jella Lepman’s postwar campaign for international children’s books.
Hans Christian Andersen Award nominations: Official candidacies submitted by IBBY national sections for consideration by the award jury. A candidate must be nominated through an IBBY national section.
