Hans Hofmann

Hans Hofmann (1880–1966) was a German-American painter and teacher whose abstract paintings and teaching shaped postwar American art. His ideas emphasized pictorial tension, color, and the push and pull of forms in space.

Push and pull: A theory of pictorial space in which color and form advance or recede through visual forces. Hofmann used this principle to explain how flat paintings can suggest spatial depth.
Lee Krasner: An American abstract painter associated with the New York School and Abstract Expressionism. Krasner studied with Hofmann in New York before developing her own distinct practice.
Munich: A major city in southern Germany and the capital of Bavaria. Hofmann trained and began his artistic life in Munich before moving to the United States.
