Knowra Hans Sloane Hans Sloane Hans Sloane (1660–1753) was an English physician, naturalist, and collector whose vast collections and library became a foundation of the British Museum.
Royal Society : A British learned society founded in 1660 to promote natural knowledge through observation and experiment. Its scientific network connected Sloane to collectors, correspondents, and fellow naturalists.
Cabinet of curiosities : A collection of unusual natural and human-made objects assembled to display knowledge and wonder. Sloane’s collection grew from this early modern culture of encyclopedic gathering.
British Museum : A national museum in London founded in 1753 to hold collections relating to human history, art, and culture. Parliament acquired Sloane’s collections for the museum’s founding.
Mary Sloane : Hans Sloane’s wife and an administrator of his estate after his death. She helped carry out the arrangements that made his collection available for purchase by the nation.
