Hans Spemann

Hans Spemann (1869–1941) was a German embryologist whose experiments established embryonic induction and the organizer effect. He received the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Spemann–Mangold organizer experiment: A 1924 transplantation experiment showed that dorsal-lip tissue from an amphibian embryo could induce a secondary body axis. This landmark experiment demonstrated the organizer effect and earned Spemann the Nobel Prize.
Embryonic induction: A process in which one group of embryonic cells influences the developmental fate of neighboring cells. Spemann’s organizer experiments provided a classic demonstration of induction.
Hilde Mangold: A German embryologist whose transplantation experiments with Hans Spemann demonstrated the amphibian organizer. Mangold performed the decisive grafting work behind the 1924 organizer experiment.

Chordin: A secreted protein that inhibits bone morphogenetic protein signaling and promotes dorsal development in vertebrate embryos. Later molecular work identified Chordin as part of the signaling logic underlying organizer activity.
