Hardboiled fiction

A crime-fiction tradition centered on tough, often morally compromised investigators confronting violence and corruption. Its terse style and unsentimental view of power distinguish it from puzzle-centered detective fiction.

Private investigator: A person hired to investigate cases independently of law-enforcement agencies. Hardboiled stories often center on investigators operating outside official institutions.
Pulp magazine: A cheaply produced magazine printed on inexpensive wood-pulp paper. Pulp magazines gave hardboiled fiction a mass-market home and favored fast, direct storytelling.
Whodunit: A mystery narrative structured around discovering which character committed a crime. Hardboiled plots may solve crimes, but they often emphasize confrontation and corruption over a fair-play puzzle.
Film noir: A style of crime film associated with shadowed imagery, moral uncertainty, and fatalistic plots. Hollywood adaptations translated hardboiled characters and urban crime into a distinctive visual style.
First-person narrative: A narrative mode in which a character recounts events using the first person. The investigator’s restricted viewpoint makes uncertainty and personal judgment part of the story.
Carroll John Daly: An American crime writer whose tough private detective stories appeared in pulp magazines. His Race Williams stories helped popularize the hardboiled detective before Hammett’s major works.
Unreliable narrator: A narrator whose account cannot be accepted as fully accurate or trustworthy. A detective’s limited knowledge and self-deception can make the investigation’s account uncertain.
Neo-noir: A later film and fiction mode that reworks noir conventions in newer settings and forms. Neo-noir carries hardboiled pessimism into periods and genres beyond classic noir.
Noir fiction: Crime fiction characterized by bleak outlooks, compromised characters, and destructive choices. Noir shares hardboiled fiction’s moral darkness but often shifts attention from the investigator to doomed protagonists.
Race Williams: A fictional private detective created by Carroll John Daly, known for his blunt, aggressive manner. The character is an early model of the forceful investigator central to hardboiled fiction.
