Hardy–Littlewood circle method

An analytic technique for estimating integer solutions to additive problems by integrating generating functions over the unit circle. It separates the integral into major and minor arcs to isolate main terms from error.

Orthogonality of characters: An identity stating that averaging characters over a group isolates matching frequencies or residue classes. Integrating exponential phases over the circle selects precisely the integer solutions being counted.
Goldbach's conjecture: The conjecture that every even integer greater than two is a sum of two primes. The circle method gives asymptotic results for related prime sums, though not a proof of the binary conjecture.
G. H. Hardy: An English mathematician whose work shaped analytic number theory and the study of divergent series. Hardy developed the method with Littlewood for estimating additive representation counts.
Fourier analysis on the circle: The study of functions on the unit circle through their Fourier coefficients and frequencies. The integral formula is a Fourier coefficient extraction for a generating function.

Rational approximation: The approximation of real numbers by rational numbers, often with controlled denominator and error. Dirichlet’s approximation theorem ensures every phase lies near a rational point or in a manageable minor-arc region.
Major arc: A small neighborhood on the unit circle of a rational point with a relatively small denominator. Near rational phases, generating functions often admit approximations that produce the main term.
Waring's problem: The problem of expressing every sufficiently large integer as a sum of a fixed number of positive integer powers. Its representation counts are a principal setting for the circle method.
