Harlem

Harlem is a neighborhood in northern Manhattan, New York City. It became a major center of African American culture and arts, especially during the Harlem Renaissance.

Harlem Renaissance: A flowering of African American literature, music, visual art, and thought centered in Harlem during the 1920s and 1930s. This movement made Harlem a nationally recognized center of Black arts and intellectual life.
Great Migration: The mass movement of African Americans from the rural South to cities in the North and West during the twentieth century. The migration brought thousands of Black residents to Harlem and expanded its cultural life.
Zora Neale Hurston: An American writer and anthropologist whose fiction and folklore scholarship became central to African American literature. Hurston’s work connected Harlem’s literary circles with Black life across the American South.
Strivers' Row: A group of historic row houses in Harlem built in the late nineteenth century and later associated with Black professionals. Its homes reflect Harlem’s changing population and the rise of a Black professional class.
Greenwich Village: A Manhattan neighborhood known for its artistic communities and bohemian culture. Its overlapping artistic life offers a comparison with Harlem’s culturally distinct renaissance.
Cotton Club: A Harlem nightclub that featured Black performers for largely white audiences during the 1920s and 1930s. Its fame tied Harlem nightlife to both Black performance and racial segregation.
New Negro Movement: An early twentieth-century movement asserting Black cultural achievement, political rights, and racial pride. Its ideals helped frame the cultural confidence associated with Harlem’s renaissance.
Aaron Douglas: An African American painter and illustrator whose modernist style became closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Douglas helped give the movement a distinctive visual language.
125th Street: A major east–west thoroughfare in Harlem, known for commerce, transit, and cultural institutions. The street has long served as a commercial and public center of the neighborhood.
Bronzeville: A historically Black neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side that became a center of Black culture and business. Bronzeville parallels Harlem as a cultural center shaped by migration and segregation.
