Harmonium

A keyboard instrument in which bellows force air across free reeds, producing sustained notes. Many models use hand-operated bellows and are played while seated.

Free reed: A reed that vibrates through an opening in its frame, driven by airflow in either direction. Each harmonium note is produced by a free reed vibrating as bellows move air through it.
Christian Gottlieb Kratzenstein: An eighteenth-century German-Danish physician and physicist who developed early free-reed instruments. His experiments helped establish the free-reed principle later used in harmoniums.
Hindustani classical music: The North Indian classical music tradition, organized around raga, tala, and improvisation. Harmonium players commonly support vocalists and reproduce melodic phrases in this tradition.
Accordion: A portable free-reed instrument whose bellows are operated by pushing and pulling the instrument’s sides. Unlike most harmoniums, an accordion uses bellows motion directly during performance and often has buttons or bass keys.
Bellows: A collapsible air chamber that moves air when compressed or expanded. The bellows provide the airflow that sets the harmonium’s reeds vibrating.
Anton Haeckl: A Viennese instrument maker associated with the early physharmonica, a bellows-driven free-reed instrument. The physharmonica was a European predecessor in the harmonium’s development.
Qawwali: A devotional music tradition associated with Sufi shrines in South Asia. The harmonium often supplies melodic support in qawwali ensembles.
Concertina: A small bellows-driven free-reed instrument with buttons at both ends. Its compact, button-based layout differs from the harmonium’s keyboard and stationary bellows arrangement.
Soundboard: A resonant structure that transfers an instrument’s vibrations to the surrounding air. The harmonium’s soundboard and case help project the reed sound.
Alexandre Debain: A French instrument maker who patented and popularized the harmonium in the nineteenth century. His Parisian designs helped establish the instrument’s name and commercial form.
