The Mask of Orpheus : A three-act opera by Birtwistle, with a libretto by Peter Zinovieff, that retells the Orpheus myth through multiple versions of events. This opera brings his mythic subjects and layered musical structure together on a grand scale.
Rhythm in music : The organization of durations and accents in music, creating patterns of movement and emphasis. Birtwistle’s music often makes rhythm a structural force rather than an accompaniment.
