Martin Luther King Jr. : Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and civil rights leader who advocated nonviolent resistance. Belafonte advised King and supported the movement’s organizing and fundraising.
Calypso (music) : Calypso is a Trinidadian music genre known for rhythmic storytelling, social commentary, and call-and-response singing. Belafonte’s recordings brought calypso to a mass international audience.
American civil rights movement : The American civil rights movement was a mass struggle to end racial segregation and secure equal rights, especially from the 1950s through the 1960s. Belafonte was a major funder, organizer, and adviser within this movement.
