Harry Nyquist

Harry Nyquist (1889–1976) was a Swedish-American physicist and electrical engineer at Bell Labs. His work shaped communication theory and control engineering through foundational results on signal transmission, sampling, and feedback stability.

Sampling theorem: A theorem stating when regularly spaced samples can uniquely represent a band-limited continuous signal. Nyquist’s name is attached to the rate needed to reconstruct a band-limited signal.
Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem: A theorem stating that a band-limited signal can be reconstructed from samples taken at more than twice its highest frequency. It gives the precise reconstruction condition associated with Nyquist’s sampling work.
Bell Labs: An American industrial research organization established by the Bell System for telecommunications and related science. Nyquist developed much of his influential communication and control work there.
Analog-to-digital conversion: The process of converting a continuously varying analog signal into a digital representation. The sampling condition guides how rapidly converters must measure band-limited inputs.
Information theory: The mathematical study of information, its representation, and its reliable transmission. Nyquist’s transmission limits were precursors to the field Shannon formalized.
Nyquist rate: The minimum sampling frequency required to represent a band-limited signal without aliasing, equal to twice its highest frequency. This rate expresses Nyquist’s sampling result in quantitative form.
Nyquist–Hartley theorem: A formula for the maximum signaling rate of a noiseless communication channel given its bandwidth and number of signal levels. Nyquist derived an early limit linking channel bandwidth to signaling speed.
AT&T: An American telecommunications company that became the dominant provider of telephone service in the United States. Nyquist’s Bell System research addressed the transmission problems central to AT&T’s network.
Digital audio: The representation and processing of sound as discrete numerical samples. Audio sampling rates are chosen with the Nyquist limit for audible frequencies in mind.
Digital signal processing: The representation and manipulation of signals using discrete numerical computations. Sampling theory underlies the conversion of continuous signals into processable data.
