Hashemite dynasty

The Hashemite dynasty is an Arab royal house descended from the Hashemites of the Hejaz. Its members have ruled Jordan since 1921.

Hashemites: A family tracing descent from Hashim ibn Abd Manaf, an ancestor of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The ruling Jordanian house descends from this broader family.
Abdullah I of Jordan: The first king of Jordan, who founded the Emirate of Transjordan in 1921 and ruled until his assassination in 1951. He established the Hashemite branch that still rules Jordan.
Constitution of Jordan: Jordan’s supreme legal framework, adopted in 1952, defining state institutions and citizens’ rights. It sets the formal structure within which the king exercises authority.
Jordanian annexation of the West Bank: Jordan’s 1950 incorporation of the West Bank, which it controlled until 1967 and formally relinquished in 1988. The decision reshaped the kingdom’s population and the monarchy’s regional claims.
Hashemite Kingdom of Iraq: The Iraqi monarchy ruled by a Hashemite branch from 1921 until its overthrow in 1958. Its violent end contrasts with the dynasty’s survival in Jordan.
Sharifate of Mecca: A hereditary office governing Mecca, traditionally held by sharifs claiming descent from Muhammad. Hashemite rulers emerged from the sharifian leadership of the Hejaz.
Talal of Jordan: King of Jordan from 1951 to 1952 and the father of Hussein of Jordan. His brief reign preceded the dynasty’s long rule under his son.
Monarchy of Jordan: Jordan’s hereditary constitutional monarchy, headed by a king from the Hashemite dynasty. The dynasty’s political role is exercised through this state institution.
Black September: The 1970–1971 conflict in Jordan between the state and Palestinian armed organizations. The confrontation tested the monarchy’s control and transformed Jordanian-Palestinian relations.
Kingdom of Hejaz: An independent Hashemite state in the Hejaz, ruled by Hussein bin Ali from 1916 until its conquest in 1925. The dynasty lost its homeland while retaining power in Jordan.
