Hashtag activism

Hashtag activism is political organizing and advocacy conducted through social-media hashtags. It uses searchable labels to connect messages, circulate information, and coordinate public attention.

Hashtag: A word or phrase prefixed by a hash sign, used on social platforms to tag and find related posts. A shared tag lets separate advocacy posts become part of one searchable conversation.
#BlackLivesMatter: A hashtag and movement opposing anti-Black racism and violence, especially police violence. It became a prominent example of hashtag-driven visibility and mobilization around police violence.
Slacktivism: A disparaging term for low-effort online support that is thought to substitute for more consequential action. The term captures a common criticism that posting a hashtag may not produce material change.
Grassroots movement: A political or social movement built from local participants rather than directed primarily by established institutions. Hashtag activity can support grassroots organizing, but online visibility alone does not establish local roots.
Networked public: A public formed and connected through networked communication technologies. Hashtag campaigns gather participants who may never meet or belong to one organization.
#MeToo movement: A movement against sexual harassment and assault, amplified globally by survivors sharing experiences. The hashtag enabled personal accounts to reveal the scale of sexual abuse and harassment.
Digital divide: The gap between people who have effective access to digital technologies and those who do not. Unequal access means hashtag campaigns cannot reach or represent everyone equally.
Astroturfing: The deceptive presentation of centrally organized advocacy as spontaneous grassroots support. Manufactured hashtag campaigns can imitate the distributed appearance of public participation.
Virality: The rapid spread of content through social networks, often via sharing between users. Rapid circulation can make a campaign visible far beyond its initial participants.
#BringBackOurGirls: A campaign demanding the release of schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram in Nigeria in 2014. Its global reach showed how a hashtag can amplify a demand tied to a specific crisis.
