Hassanal Bolkiah

Hassanal Bolkiah is the 29th Sultan of Brunei, reigning since 1967. He is also Brunei’s head of state and government.

Absolute monarchy: A system of government in which a monarch holds broad governing authority, not constitutionally limited by an elected legislature. Brunei’s political system concentrates executive authority in the Sultan.
Omar Ali Saifuddien III: The 28th Sultan of Brunei, who abdicated in 1967 in favor of his son Hassanal Bolkiah. His abdication brought Bolkiah to the throne.
Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah: The eldest son of Hassanal Bolkiah and Brunei’s Crown Prince, designated heir to the throne. He is the public successor to Bolkiah’s long reign.
Brunei's oil and gas industry: The petroleum and natural-gas sector that has financed much of Brunei’s public revenue and economic activity. Hydrocarbon wealth underpins the resources available to the state during Bolkiah’s reign.
Constitutional monarchy: A monarchy in which a constitution and elected institutions limit the monarch’s governing powers. Brunei differs because the Sultan retains extensive executive authority.
Prime Minister of Brunei: The head of government of Brunei, an office held by the Sultan since its creation in 1984. Bolkiah has held this office alongside the sultanate since Brunei’s independence.
Brunei: A sovereign state on the island of Borneo, ruled by a hereditary sultanate. Bolkiah’s reign is inseparable from the country whose ruler he is.
Jefri Bolkiah: A Bruneian prince and former finance minister, and a younger brother of Hassanal Bolkiah. His financial controversies became a prominent issue within the ruling family.
Brunei Investment Agency: Brunei’s sovereign wealth fund, established in 1983 to manage state assets and investments. It manages a portion of the national wealth accumulated during the monarchy.
Malaysia: A federal constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia with an elected parliament and a rotating head of state. Its constitutional limits and elected government contrast with Brunei’s political arrangements.
