Hausdorff paradox

A theorem in set theory and geometry showing that a sphere, apart from a countable exceptional set, can be partitioned into pieces whose rotations yield a larger sphere.

Free group: A group whose elements are reduced words in generators and their inverses, with no relations beyond cancellation. Rotations about two suitably chosen axes generate the free-group structure used in the decomposition.
Felix Hausdorff: A German mathematician whose work helped establish modern topology and set theory. He proved the sphere decomposition in 1914 and gave the paradox its name.
Banach–Tarski paradox: A theorem stating that a solid ball can be partitioned into finitely many pieces and reassembled into two balls of equal size. It strengthens the sphere result by producing two balls from one using finitely many pieces.
Non-Euclidean geometry: Geometries that replace Euclid's parallel postulate with a different axiom. Both challenge geometric intuition, though the paradox concerns set-theoretic decompositions rather than altered geometry.
Nonmeasurable set: A set to which no measure satisfying specified axioms can assign a consistent size. The paradoxical pieces cannot have ordinary surface area, avoiding conservation of area under rotation.
Hausdorff's Grundzüge der Mengenlehre: Felix Hausdorff's 1914 textbook that helped shape modern set theory and topology. The paradox appeared in Hausdorff's systematic treatment of set theory.
Vitali set: A subset of the real numbers that cannot be assigned a translation-invariant Lebesgue measure. It is another choice-based construction illustrating why not every set has a well-defined measure.
Equidecomposability: A relation between sets that can be partitioned into finitely many pieces and matched by specified transformations. The paradox is an early, striking instance of equidecomposition under rotations.
Group action: A rule assigning transformations of a set to elements of a group while preserving the group operation. The proof organizes sphere rotations as a group acting on points and their orbits.
Measure theory: The mathematical study of assigning sizes to sets while respecting operations such as countable unions. The decomposition exposed limits on extending ordinary area to all subsets of a sphere.
