Hawaiian pizza
A pizza topped with pineapple and ham, usually with tomato sauce and cheese. It was created in Canada, despite its name.
Sam Panopoulos: A Greek-born Canadian restaurateur credited with creating Hawaiian pizza in 1962. He added canned pineapple to pizza at the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario.
Pizza: A baked flatbread dish, usually topped with sauce, cheese, and other ingredients. Hawaiian pizza is one variety of this broader dish.
Pizza quattro stagioni: An Italian pizza divided into four sections, each representing a season and carrying different toppings. Its segmented, traditional topping arrangement contrasts with Hawaiian pizza's single sweet-savory combination.
Canadian bacon: A lean, cured pork loin product often sold in round slices and called back bacon in Canada. Some versions use it instead of other ham cuts.
Satellite Restaurant: A restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, operated by Sam Panopoulos and his brothers. This is where Hawaiian pizza was first served.
Ham: Meat from a pig's hind leg, commonly cured or smoked. Its salty, savory flavor is the standard meat counterpart to the pineapple.
Pizza capricciosa: An Italian pizza commonly topped with ham, mushrooms, artichokes, olives, and tomato. It pairs ham with savory toppings rather than Hawaiian pizza's pineapple.
Barbecue chicken pizza: A pizza topped with chicken and barbecue sauce, often with cheese and vegetables. It is another popular nontraditional pizza whose toppings depart from classic Italian conventions.
Chatham-Kent: A municipality in southwestern Ontario, Canada, formed from the city of Chatham and surrounding townships. The dish originated in Chatham, now part of this municipality.
Pineapple: A tropical fruit with sweet, acidic flesh and a tough, spiky rind. Its sweet acidity defines the pizza's characteristic contrast with ham and cheese.
