Hearth

A place in a building where fire is kept for cooking, heating, or light. It can also mean the floor or area immediately surrounding a fireplace.

Fireplace: A built structure that contains a fire, often with a firebox and chimney. A common enclosed form of hearth in later buildings.
Open hearth: An exposed indoor fire area, often positioned at the center of a room before chimneys became common. It represents an early arrangement in which smoke escaped through the roof.
Cooking: The preparation of food using heat or other techniques. Hearth fires provided a direct means of preparing household meals.
Home: A place where a person or household lives and feels a sense of belonging. The hearth's central domestic role helped make it a symbol of home.
Chimney: A vertical passage that carries smoke and combustion gases out of a building. It draws smoke away from the hearth and helps sustain combustion.
Smoke hole: An opening in a roof or ceiling that allows smoke from an indoor fire to escape. Before chimneys, smoke from a hearth often left through a roof opening.
Wood-burning stove: A closed appliance that burns wood to provide heat, often with controlled airflow. It performs some hearth functions while containing fire more efficiently.
Hestia: The ancient Greek goddess of the hearth, domestic life, and the sacred fire. Her worship connected household hearths with religious life.
Flue: A duct or passage that conveys exhaust gases from a combustion appliance to the outdoors. The flue is the smoke-carrying passage within or connected to a chimney.
Chimney breast: The projecting part of a wall that encloses a chimney and often contains a fireplace. Chimneys relocated many hearths from the room's center to its perimeter.
