Knowra Hector Guimard Hector Guimard Hector Guimard (1867–1942) was a French architect and designer whose organic Art Nouveau forms shaped buildings, interiors, furniture, and the Paris Métro’s celebrated entrances.
Art Nouveau : An international style of art and design, prominent around 1890–1910, characterized by flowing lines and organic forms. Its sinuous lines and natural motifs define the visual language Guimard adapted.
Paris Métro entrances by Hector Guimard : Art Nouveau station entrances designed by Guimard for the Paris Métro, many installed from 1900 onward. These entrances are his signature public works and the clearest expression of his design system.
École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs : A Paris institution providing higher education in decorative arts and design, founded in 1766. Guimard studied there before entering architectural practice.
Adeline Oppenheim Guimard : An American painter and the wife of Hector Guimard, whom she married in 1909. Her residence with Guimard became a major joint project and later helped preserve his archive.
Paris Métro station entrances : Structures at street level that provide access to underground Paris Métro stations. Guimard’s designs made station access a conspicuous element of the city’s streetscape.
Cast iron : An iron alloy with a high carbon content that can be melted and cast into complex shapes. Casting made the Métro entrances’ elaborate, repeatable forms practical to produce.
Castel Béranger : An apartment building in Paris designed by Guimard and completed in 1898. Its varied materials and ornament established Guimard’s early reputation.
École des Beaux-Arts : A French system of fine-arts schools, especially associated with the Paris institution that shaped academic art and architecture. Guimard studied at the Paris school, whose academic tradition formed a backdrop to his later departures.
Louis Coilliot : A Lille ceramicist and manufacturer who commissioned Guimard to design his house. His Maison Coilliot gave Guimard an opportunity to integrate architectural design with ceramic production.
Historic monument : A French legal designation protecting buildings, sites, and objects of cultural or historical significance. Several surviving Guimard entrances received protection as historic monuments.
