Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr (1914–2000) was an Austrian-born American actor and inventor. With composer George Antheil, she patented a frequency-hopping communication system intended to make radio-controlled torpedoes harder to jam.

Frequency-hopping spread spectrum: A radio technique that rapidly changes carrier frequencies according to a shared sequence. Lamarr and Antheil proposed synchronized frequency changes to protect torpedo-control signals from jamming.
George Antheil: An American avant-garde composer, pianist, and inventor who collaborated with Hedy Lamarr on a radio-control system. Antheil devised a player-piano synchronization scheme that informed their frequency-hopping proposal.
Louis B. Mayer: An American film producer who co-founded Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and led it during Hollywood's studio era. Mayer brought Lamarr to Hollywood after encountering her in Europe.
