Hegelian dialectic

A philosophical approach in which contradictions within thought or reality prompt transformation. In Hegel’s account, development proceeds through determinate negation toward more comprehensive forms.

Determinate negation: A negation that arises from a thing’s specific limits and yields a more developed concept. It names how contradiction produces a successor shaped by what it negates.
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: A German philosopher whose system examines reality, thought, history, and freedom as developing processes. The dialectic takes its distinctive form within Hegel’s philosophical system.
Immanuel Kant: An eighteenth-century philosopher who examined the conditions and limits of human knowledge. Hegel’s account of contradiction responds to Kant’s treatment of reason’s antinomies.
Thesis–antithesis–synthesis: A three-stage formula often used to summarize dialectical development, though it is not Hegel’s general method. The slogan is often mistaken for Hegel’s own standard account of dialectic.
Karl Marx: A nineteenth-century philosopher and political economist whose critique of capitalism shaped socialist movements. Marx adapted dialectical thinking while grounding historical development in material social relations.
Aufhebung: A German term for a movement that cancels, preserves, and raises something to a new level. It captures the combined overcoming and preservation at work in dialectical development.
German idealism: A movement in German philosophy that developed Kant’s critical philosophy into accounts of mind, freedom, and reality. Hegelian dialectic belongs to this wider philosophical movement.
Johann Gottlieb Fichte: A German idealist philosopher who grounded knowledge and action in the activity of the self. Fichte’s account of opposition and self-activity helped shape the idealist context Hegel inherited.
Formal logic: The study of valid inference through formally specified relations among propositions. Hegel’s dialectic challenges approaches that treat contradiction only as a defect in reasoning.
Marxism: A tradition of social and political thought based on Marx’s critique of capitalism and account of historical change. Its theories recast dialectical development in material and economic terms.
