Hegelianism

Hegelianism is a philosophical tradition based on G. W. F. Hegel’s thought. It treats reality, history, and reason as interconnected and developing through dialectical relations.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: German philosopher whose system shaped idealism, political thought, and later continental philosophy. His works and arguments provide the tradition’s foundation.
Determinate negation: A negation that arises from a specific position and produces a successor shaped by what it negates. It explains why dialectical change has determinate content rather than being mere rejection.
German idealism: A philosophical movement in German-speaking Europe around 1780–1830, centered on the conditions and structure of experience. Hegelianism developed within this movement’s debates about Kant and idealism.
Karl Marx: German philosopher and political economist whose critique of capitalism helped establish Marxism. Marx reworked Hegelian dialectic into a materialist account of history and society.
Kantianism: A philosophical tradition based on Kant’s critical philosophy and its account of knowledge, morality, and judgment. Hegelianism challenges Kantian limits while retaining many of its central problems.
Dialectic: A method of reasoning and development through tensions among positions or forces. Dialectical relations explain how Hegelian thought understands change.
Master–slave dialectic: A passage in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit in which self-consciousness develops through conflict and recognition. It shows selfhood emerging through dependence on another consciousness.
Immanuel Kant: German philosopher who argued that experience is structured by the mind’s forms and categories. Hegel inherited Kant’s questions while challenging limits in his account of knowledge and freedom.
Marxism: A political and social theory derived from Marx’s critique of capitalism and analysis of historical change. It is the most influential tradition to transform Hegelian historical thinking.
Positivism: The view that reliable knowledge rests on empirical observation and scientific methods. Its emphasis on observable facts conflicts with Hegelian accounts of conceptual and historical mediation.
