Heisenberg model

The Heisenberg model describes quantum spins coupled by pairwise exchange interactions. The signs and strengths of these couplings shape magnetic order and quantum fluctuations.

Heisenberg Hamiltonian: The operator encoding exchange interactions between spins in the Heisenberg model. Its coupling terms specify which spin alignments lower the system’s energy.
Quantum spin: An intrinsic form of angular momentum carried by quantum particles and represented by noncommuting operators. The model assigns a quantum spin degree of freedom to each lattice site.
One-dimensional Heisenberg model: A Heisenberg model whose interacting spins lie along a one-dimensional chain. The chain is the simplest setting for strong quantum fluctuations and exact solutions.
Quantum magnetism: The study of magnetic phenomena in which quantum mechanics governs the behavior of spins. The Heisenberg model is a central framework for quantum magnetic materials.
Werner Heisenberg: A German theoretical physicist who developed matrix mechanics and made foundational contributions to quantum theory. He introduced the exchange-based quantum theory of ferromagnetism associated with this model.
Exchange interaction: A quantum-mechanical interaction arising from the indistinguishability of particles and their overlapping wavefunctions. It produces the effective coupling between neighboring spins.
Spin operator: An operator representing angular momentum in quantum mechanics, with components obeying angular-momentum commutation relations. Its components appear in the pairwise interaction terms.
Spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain: A one-dimensional Heisenberg model with spin one-half at each site. Its antiferromagnetic case is a benchmark for quantum critical behavior.
Cuprate superconductors: Copper-oxide materials that become superconducting when charge carriers are introduced into their insulating parent compounds. Their parent compounds are often modeled as square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets.
Quantum exchange interaction: An effective interaction between quantum particles arising from wavefunction symmetry and Coulomb repulsion. It supplied the microscopic basis for Heisenberg’s account of magnetic ordering.
