Helena

Helena (c. 246–330) was a Roman empress and the mother of Constantine the Great. Christian tradition associates her with the discovery of the True Cross.

Constantine the Great: Roman emperor from 306 to 337 who reunified the empire and supported Christianity. Helena was his mother, and his rule gave her unusual imperial standing.
Drepanum: An ancient city in Bithynia, later renamed Helenopolis in honor of Helena. Ancient sources associate this city with Helena’s birthplace.
True Cross: The cross on which Jesus was crucified, whose alleged relics became objects of Christian veneration. Helena’s legendary discovery made her central to the relic’s Christian history.

Eusebius of Caesarea: A fourth-century Christian bishop and historian who wrote a biography of Constantine. His account describes Helena’s pilgrimage and church-building but does not report her finding the Cross.
Fausta: Roman empress, daughter of Maximian, and wife of Constantine the Great. Constantine’s marriage to Fausta displaced Helena from the imperial household’s central position.
Tetrarchy: The Roman system of rule by two senior emperors and two junior emperors, established by Diocletian. Helena’s rise began amid the political order in which Constantius Chlorus served as Caesar.
