Heligoland

Heligoland is a small German archipelago in the North Sea, distinguished by red sandstone cliffs and its status as a municipality of Schleswig-Holstein.

Heligoland Bight: A southeastern bay of the North Sea bordered by Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Heligoland lies within this broad coastal inlet.
Treaty of Kiel: The 1814 treaty that ended Denmark’s participation in the Napoleonic Wars and transferred Norway to Sweden. Its terms transferred Heligoland from Denmark to Britain.
Heligoland red sandstone: The Triassic sedimentary rock that forms Heligoland’s conspicuous red cliffs. Its color and coastal exposure define the archipelago’s best-known scenery.
