Helioseismology

Helioseismology infers the Sun’s internal structure and dynamics from oscillations measured at its surface, much as terrestrial seismology studies Earth through seismic waves.

Solar p-mode oscillations: Solar pressure modes are acoustic oscillations restored by pressure forces, with frequencies shaped by the Sun’s interior. Their measured frequencies provide the main data for mapping the solar interior.
Solar internal rotation: The variation of angular velocity with radius and latitude inside the Sun. Mode frequency shifts map rotation beneath the visible surface.
Solar five-minute oscillations: A prominent pattern of solar surface oscillations with periods near five minutes. Their discovery established that the Sun rings with measurable global acoustic modes.
Asteroseismology: The study of stellar interiors through oscillations observed in stars. It generalizes helioseismic methods to stars whose surfaces appear only as unresolved points.
Solar neutrino oscillation: The transformation of neutrinos among flavor states as they travel from the Sun to detectors. It resolved the neutrino deficit, while helioseismology continues to constrain the Sun’s structure independently.
Solar g-mode oscillations: Solar gravity modes are oscillations restored by buoyancy, expected to probe the deep radiative interior. Their elusive signals could reveal conditions near the solar core.
Solar convection zone: The outer solar layer where energy transport is dominated by turbulent convection. Helioseismology measures its depth and the changing rotation within it.
Robert B. Leighton: An American solar physicist who discovered five-minute oscillations in the Sun’s photosphere. His observations supplied the first clear evidence behind modern helioseismology.
Terrestrial seismology: The study of Earth’s interior and structure using seismic waves. It shares the inverse-wave logic, but Earth’s sources and observing geometry differ.
Solar dynamo: The processes by which motion and magnetic fields inside the Sun sustain its magnetic activity. Helioseismic flow maps constrain dynamo models, but the mechanism generating the solar cycle remains unsettled.
