Hell Creek Formation

The Hell Creek Formation is a sequence of Late Cretaceous and early Paleocene rocks exposed across parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Its fossils document ecosystems near the end-Cretaceous mass extinction.

Tyrannosaurus: A large, carnivorous dinosaur that lived in western North America during the latest Cretaceous. Hell Creek deposits preserve some of the best-known fossils of this apex predator.
Fluvial depositional environment: A setting where rivers deposit sediment in channels, floodplains, and related landforms. River systems formed much of the sedimentary landscape recorded by Hell Creek rocks.
Late Cretaceous: The final epoch of the Cretaceous Period, spanning roughly 100.5 to 66 million years ago. Most Hell Creek sediments and fossils date to the latest part of this epoch.
Barnum Brown: An American paleontologist who collected major dinosaur fossils for the American Museum of Natural History. Brown’s early twentieth-century fieldwork helped establish the formation’s importance for dinosaur research.
Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event: A global mass extinction about 66 million years ago that eliminated non-avian dinosaurs and many other organisms. Hell Creek fossils are used to study how terrestrial communities changed across the extinction.
Triceratops: A large, three-horned herbivorous dinosaur from the latest Cretaceous of western North America. Its abundant fossils make it one of the formation’s signature dinosaurs.
Floodplain: Low-lying land beside a river that is periodically covered by floodwater and sediment. Floodplain muds and soils preserve much of the formation’s terrestrial fossil record.
Paleocene: The first geological epoch of the Paleogene Period, lasting from about 66 to 56 million years ago. The formation’s uppermost deposits include early Paleocene rocks above the extinction boundary.
John Bell Hatcher: An American paleontologist known for extensive fossil collecting in the western United States. His collecting and documentation contributed to early knowledge of Hell Creek’s dinosaur fauna.
Chicxulub impact: The asteroid impact in present-day Mexico associated with the Cretaceous–Paleogene mass extinction. Hell Creek strata preserve the regional fossil record immediately before and after its global effects.
