Hellenization

Hellenization is the adoption or adaptation of Greek language, customs, and institutions by people beyond Greece, especially after Alexander the Great’s conquests.

Koine Greek: A widely shared form of Greek that emerged in the Hellenistic period and became a language of administration and literature. Its spread gave diverse communities a common language for public life and exchange.
Greco-Bactrian Kingdom: A Greek-led kingdom in Bactria that emerged from the Seleucid Empire during the third century BCE. Its cities and coinage show Greek forms taking root far east of the Mediterranean.
Romanization: The spread or adoption of Roman language, laws, customs, and institutions across territories under Roman influence. Roman rule later spread its own institutions, often alongside established Greek culture.
Septuagint: The ancient Greek translation of Jewish scriptures, produced in stages beginning in the third century BCE. It brought Jewish texts into the language shared across much of the Hellenistic world.
Maccabean Revolt: A Jewish revolt against Seleucid rule in Judea from 167 to 160 BCE, followed by the establishment of Hasmonean rule. The revolt arose amid conflict over Seleucid authority and Greek customs in Judea.
Hellenistic cities: Cities founded or reshaped in the eastern Mediterranean and Asia after Alexander’s conquests, often organized around Greek institutions. Urban institutions made Greek civic customs visible and reproducible across conquered regions.
Indo-Greek Kingdoms: A group of Greek-ruled kingdoms in parts of Central and South Asia from the second century BCE onward. Their coins and art reveal contact between Greek and South Asian traditions.
Acculturation: Cultural change that occurs through sustained contact between groups, involving the adoption or adaptation of practices. Hellenization is a historically specific form of this broader process.
Hellenistic Judaism: Forms of Jewish life and thought shaped through interaction with Greek language and culture during the Hellenistic era. It shows Greek influence being incorporated into Jewish intellectual and communal life.
Hasmonean dynasty: A Jewish ruling dynasty that governed Judea from the second to first centuries BCE after the Maccabean Revolt. Its rule shows Jewish political autonomy coexisting with selective Hellenistic influences.
