Helmholtz free energy
Helmholtz free energy is the thermodynamic potential F = U − TS, where U is internal energy, T is absolute temperature, and S is entropy. At fixed temperature and volume, its decrease characterizes spontaneous processes and its minimum identifies equilibrium.
