Helminthology

Helminthology is the study of parasitic worms, including their biology, classification, life cycles, and relationships with hosts.

Nematodes: Nematodes are unsegmented, cylindrical worms found in nearly every environment; many species are parasites. They form one of the major worm groups examined in helminthology.
Helminth life cycle: A helminth life cycle is the sequence of developmental stages through which a parasitic worm passes between hosts or environments. Life-cycle analysis connects worm development to host infection and transmission.
Stool ova and parasite examination: Stool ova and parasite examination is laboratory testing of feces for parasite eggs, larvae, cysts, or organisms. Microscopic stool examination detects many intestinal helminth infections.
Rudolf Leuckart: Rudolf Leuckart was a German zoologist whose research helped establish modern parasitology and the study of parasite life cycles. His experimental work clarified the development and transmission of parasitic worms.
Anthelmintic resistance: Anthelmintic resistance is the inherited ability of parasites to survive doses of drugs that once controlled them. Resistance threatens the long-term effectiveness of worm-control programs.
Trematodes: Trematodes are flatworm parasites, commonly called flukes, with complex life cycles that often involve multiple hosts. Their distinctive anatomy and host cycles make them a central study group.
Intermediate host: An intermediate host harbors a parasite during a developmental stage that does not reach sexual maturity. Many helminths require one or more intermediate hosts to complete development.
Kato-Katz technique: The Kato-Katz technique is a thick-smear microscopy method used to quantify eggs of intestinal helminths in stool. It provides standardized estimates of infection intensity in field surveys.
Patrick Manson: Patrick Manson was a Scottish physician whose research established the role of mosquitoes in transmitting filarial parasites. His work connected helminth transmission to insect vectors.
Soil-transmitted helminths: Soil-transmitted helminths are intestinal nematodes whose infective stages develop in soil contaminated by human feces. Their persistence despite treatment raises questions about reinfection and sustainable control.
