Helmut Hasse

Helmut Hasse (1898–1979) was a German mathematician who developed local methods in algebraic number theory, especially through the theory of local fields and norm equations.

Algebraic number theory: The study of arithmetic in number fields, including their ideals, units, and extensions. This is the field in which Hasse developed local methods.
Hasse principle: A proposed local-to-global rule asserting that certain global equations have solutions whenever they have solutions in every completion. It expresses the central strategy behind Hasse’s results on equations.
Emmy Noether: A German mathematician whose work shaped abstract algebra and modern algebraic structures. Noether’s algebraic ideas influenced the mathematical environment in which Hasse worked.

Hasse invariant: An invariant used to distinguish ordinary and supersingular elliptic curves in positive characteristic. Its name reflects a later arithmetic concept connected to Hasse’s influence on the field.
