Helmut Schmidt

Helmut Schmidt was a German Social Democratic politician who served as chancellor of West Germany from 1974 to 1982. His tenure was marked by economic strain, terrorism, and Cold War tensions.

NATO Double-Track Decision: A 1979 NATO policy pairing arms-control negotiations with plans to deploy new nuclear missiles in Europe. Schmidt backed the policy despite fierce opposition, including protests within his own party.
