Hemimorphite

Hemimorphite is a zinc silicate hydroxide mineral, Zn₄Si₂O₇(OH)₂·H₂O, found mainly in oxidized zinc deposits. Its crystals can have unlike forms at opposite ends, a feature called hemimorphism.

Zinc silicate minerals: Minerals whose essential chemical constituents include zinc, silicon, and oxygen. Hemimorphite is a hydrated member of this mineral family.
Zinc carbonate: A zinc-bearing carbonate mineral group that includes smithsonite and hydrozincite. Carbonate minerals commonly occur alongside hemimorphite in weathered zinc deposits.
Zinc mining: The extraction of zinc-bearing minerals and ores for metal production. Hemimorphite can contribute to zinc resources in oxidized ore zones.
Smithsonite: A zinc carbonate mineral, ZnCO₃, commonly formed in oxidized zinc deposits. It shares the same weathering environment but contains carbonate rather than silicate.

Zinc: A bluish-white metallic element with atomic number 30, widely used in alloys and coatings. The mineral is a natural host of zinc.
Calamine: A historical mining name used inconsistently for hemimorphite, smithsonite, or mixtures of zinc minerals. The name’s shifting usage has often obscured hemimorphite’s identity.
Orthorhombic crystal system: A crystal system with three mutually perpendicular axes of unequal length. Hemimorphite’s crystal symmetry is orthorhombic.
Oxidation zone: The near-surface part of an ore deposit altered by oxygen-rich water and weathering. Hemimorphite typically forms in this altered zone above primary zinc ores.
