Hemisphere

A hemisphere is one of the two halves of a sphere, divided by a plane through its center. On Earth, the equator separates the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Sphere: A three-dimensional shape whose surface points are all the same distance from its center. A hemisphere is formed by dividing a sphere through its center.
Northern Hemisphere: The half of Earth north of the equator, extending to the North Pole. It is one of Earth’s two equator-defined hemispheres.
Northern and Southern Hemispheres: The two regions of Earth separated by the equator. This equatorial division contrasts with divisions based on longitude.
Cerebral hemisphere: Either of the two major halves of the human cerebrum, joined by nerve fibers including the corpus callosum. It applies the same half-of-a-whole idea to the brain rather than a sphere.
Equator: An imaginary circle around Earth, equally distant from the North and South Poles. It divides Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Southern Hemisphere: The half of Earth south of the equator, extending to the South Pole. It is the other half of Earth divided by the equator.
Eastern and Western Hemispheres: Two regions of Earth commonly divided by the prime meridian and the 180th meridian. This longitudinal division contrasts with the equator-based hemispheres.
Celestial hemisphere: One half of the celestial sphere, divided by a great circle such as the celestial equator. It transfers spherical division from Earth to the apparent sky.
Latitude: A geographic coordinate measuring angular distance north or south of the equator. Latitude identifies positions within Earth’s northern and southern halves.
Eastern Hemisphere: A commonly defined half of Earth east of the prime meridian and west of the 180th meridian. It shows how longitude can divide Earth into hemispheres.
