Henan

Henan is a landlocked province in central China, south of Hebei. Its name means “south of the Yellow River,” which crosses its northern part.

Yellow River: The Yellow River is a major river in northern China and the country’s second-longest river. It crosses northern Henan and helped shape the province’s settlement and agriculture.
Erlitou culture: The Erlitou culture was a Bronze Age archaeological culture centered in the Yi-Luo River valley of present-day Henan. Its remains are among the earliest evidence for complex societies in Henan.
Longmen Grottoes: The Longmen Grottoes are a complex of Buddhist cave temples and sculptures near Luoyang, China. They are Henan’s best-known monumental record of Buddhist art and patronage.
Wheat: Wheat is a cereal grain cultivated worldwide for food and animal feed. Henan is one of China’s leading wheat-producing provinces.
Zhengzhou: Zhengzhou is the capital and largest city of Henan Province. The provincial capital is Henan’s main administrative and transport center.
Shang dynasty: The Shang dynasty was an early Chinese dynasty known from archaeological remains and written records. Its late capital at Yin was located near modern Anyang in northern Henan.
Shaolin Monastery: Shaolin Monastery is a Buddhist temple on Mount Song in Henan, associated with Chan Buddhism and martial arts. Its location and global reputation make it a distinctive Henan landmark.
China–Europe Railway Express: The China–Europe Railway Express is a network of freight train services linking Chinese cities with Europe. Zhengzhou is a major hub in this rail network.
North China Plain: The North China Plain is a broad, densely populated lowland in eastern China. Much of Henan lies within this fertile plain.
Zhou dynasty: The Zhou dynasty ruled much of China from the eleventh to third centuries BCE. Its eastern capital, Luoyang, stood in Henan.
