Hendrik Lorentz

Hendrik Lorentz (1853–1928) was a Dutch theoretical physicist whose electromagnetic theory and electron model helped shape special relativity. He shared the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pieter Zeeman.

Maxwell's equations: A set of equations describing how electric and magnetic fields are generated and interact. Lorentz developed his electromagnetic theory by extending Maxwell’s account of fields and light.
Lorentz transformation: A coordinate transformation relating measurements of space and time between inertial reference frames. Lorentz derived transformations that preserved Maxwell’s equations for moving observers.
Pieter Zeeman: A Dutch physicist who discovered that magnetic fields split spectral lines, an effect named after him. Zeeman’s discovery experimentally confirmed Lorentz’s account of light emitted by moving charges.
Michelson–Morley experiment: An 1887 experiment that found no detectable change in the speed of light due to Earth’s motion through the proposed aether. Its null result challenged aether models and prompted explanations including Lorentz contraction.
Minkowski spacetime: A four-dimensional geometric model combining space and time in special relativity. Minkowski’s formulation gave Lorentz transformations a geometric interpretation.
Electromagnetic field: A physical field composed of electric and magnetic components that exert forces on charged particles. Lorentz treated fields as central to interactions between matter and electromagnetic radiation.
Lorentz force: The force exerted on a charged particle by electric and magnetic fields. This equation expresses how electromagnetic fields act on the electrons in Lorentz’s theory.
Albert Einstein: A German-born theoretical physicist whose theories reshaped modern physics, including special and general relativity. Einstein used Lorentz’s results while developing special relativity, though he rejected the need for an aether.
Zeeman effect: The splitting of spectral lines when atoms are placed in a magnetic field. Lorentz’s theoretical explanation of Zeeman’s observation helped earn their shared Nobel Prize.
Gauge theory: A framework in physics describing interactions through fields with local symmetry transformations. Lorentz’s field-centered approach helped establish the mathematical language later used in field theories.
