Henotheism

Henotheism is the worship of one god without denying the existence of other gods. It can describe a religious practice or a theological position.

Monolatry: The exclusive worship of one god without necessarily denying that other gods exist. It overlaps closely with henotheism, though it emphasizes exclusive worship rather than elevation of one deity.
Friedrich Max Müller: A German-born philologist and scholar of comparative religion who worked in Britain. Müller introduced the term while describing patterns in Vedic hymns.
Theism: Belief in the existence of at least one god. Henotheism is a theistic position that permits belief in multiple gods.
Vedic hymns: Poetic compositions in the Vedas praising gods, rituals, and cosmic powers. Individual hymns often address a particular god as the highest or most powerful.
Monotheism: The belief that only one god exists. Unlike henotheism, monotheism denies the existence of other gods.
Rigveda: An ancient Indian collection of hymns composed in Vedic Sanskrit. Its hymns praise different gods as supreme in particular acts of worship.
Deity: A god or goddess understood as a divine being. Henotheism concerns how worship is directed among recognized deities.
Indra: A Vedic god associated with storms, rain, and victory in battle. Vedic hymns sometimes exalt Indra above other gods while acknowledging their presence.
Polytheism: The belief in or worship of multiple gods. Henotheism sits within a religious landscape that recognizes multiple deities.
Vedic religion: The ancient religious tradition of the Indo-Aryan peoples who composed the Vedas. Müller used Vedic material to formulate his account of henotheistic worship.
