Henri Pirenne

Henri Pirenne (1862–1935) was a Belgian historian of medieval Europe who argued that economic and urban life persisted after the Roman Empire’s fall and changed decisively with Muslim expansion.

Pirenne Thesis: The argument that Muslim expansion disrupted Mediterranean trade and helped shift western Europe’s center of gravity northward. This is Pirenne’s best-known explanation for the economic break between the ancient and medieval worlds.
