Henri Poincaré

Henri Poincaré (1854–1912) was a French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher of science whose work shaped topology, celestial mechanics, and the qualitative study of dynamical systems.

Dynamical system: A system whose state changes over time according to a specified rule. Poincaré helped make long-term behavior, rather than exact solutions alone, central to studying motion.
Poincaré map: A map that records successive returns of a continuous dynamical system to a chosen section. It converts trajectories into discrete points, making recurrent motion easier to analyze.
École Polytechnique: A French public institution of higher education founded in 1794, known for training engineers and scientists. Poincaré studied there before continuing his mathematical training at the École des Mines.
Felix Klein: A German mathematician known for work in geometry, group theory, and the Erlangen Program. Klein’s geometric program and Poincaré’s work on groups helped shape modern geometry.

Camille Jordan: A French mathematician whose work on group theory and algebra influenced nineteenth-century mathematics. Jordan’s research provided a major contemporary context for Poincaré’s work on transformation groups.
Algebraic topology: The study of topological spaces through algebraic structures such as groups and homology. Poincaré’s foundational work helped establish this field and introduced the fundamental group.
