Henry Flagler
Henry Flagler (1830–1913) was an American industrialist who helped build Standard Oil and developed Florida’s east coast railway and resort industry.
Florida East Coast Railway: A railway system that runs along Florida’s Atlantic coast, developed under Flagler’s direction. Flagler extended this railway southward, linking coastal settlements and enabling large-scale tourism.
Standard Oil: An American oil company founded in 1870 that grew into a dominant business under John D. Rockefeller and his associates. Profits and business practices from Standard Oil helped shape Flagler’s later development strategy.
John D. Rockefeller: An American industrialist who co-founded Standard Oil and became one of the wealthiest people in modern history. Rockefeller and Flagler built Standard Oil together, with Rockefeller leading its expansion.
Cleveland, Ohio: A city on Lake Erie in northeastern Ohio that became a major industrial and commercial center. Flagler entered the grain business in Cleveland before joining the oil industry.
Overseas Railroad: A railway across the Florida Keys, completed in 1912 as an extension of the Florida East Coast Railway. Flagler’s final major railway project carried his line from the mainland to Key West.

John D. Rockefeller Jr.: An American philanthropist and businessman, son of John D. Rockefeller, who supported conservation and historic preservation. After Flagler’s death, Rockefeller Jr. helped preserve St. Augustine’s historic sites.
