Henry Fox Talbot

Henry Fox Talbot was an English scientist and inventor whose calotype process helped establish photography as a means of making reproducible images.

Calotype: An early photographic process that used a paper negative to produce multiple positive prints. Talbot’s patented process made repeatable paper prints from a single photographic negative.
Negative-positive process: A photographic workflow in which a negative image is used to make one or more positive prints. The calotype’s paper negative allowed Talbot to make multiple positive copies.
Camera obscura: An optical device that projects an external scene through a small opening onto an interior surface. Talbot used this established optical device while seeking a way to preserve projected images.
Nicolaas Henneman: A Dutch-born assistant to Talbot who helped produce and distribute early photographic prints. Henneman operated Talbot’s photographic printing establishment at Reading.
Photographic printing: The production of images on paper or other surfaces from photographic negatives or digital files. Talbot’s repeatable paper prints helped establish photography as a form of image reproduction.
