Henry I of England

Henry I ruled England from 1100 to 1135 and Normandy from 1106 to 1135. The youngest son of William the Conqueror, he strengthened royal administration and left a succession crisis.

Exchequer: The central royal institution that audited and collected revenue in medieval England. Henry developed its accounting practices to make royal finances more systematic.
William the Conqueror: Duke of Normandy who conquered England in 1066 and ruled as king until 1087. Henry was his youngest son and inherited a kingdom built by his conquest.
Matilda of Scotland: Queen of England from 1100 until her death in 1118 and Henry I’s first wife. Her English and Scottish royal connections strengthened Henry’s standing after his accession.
Anglo-Norman realm: The political territories linking England and Normandy under rulers of the Norman dynasty. Henry’s conquest of Normandy brought the two territories under his authority.
Coronation of Henry I: Henry I’s coronation at Westminster Abbey on 5 August 1100, days after William II’s death. The rapid coronation secured the throne before his elder brother Robert returned from Normandy.
Pipe Rolls: Records of the English royal Exchequer’s annual accounts, surviving from the reign of Henry I. The earliest surviving roll, from 1129–30, documents his administration’s finances.
Robert Curthose: The eldest son of William the Conqueror and duke of Normandy from 1087 to 1106. Henry’s elder brother controlled Normandy until Henry defeated and captured him.
Adeliza of Louvain: Queen of England from 1121 to 1135 and Henry I’s second wife. Henry’s marriage to Adeliza produced no surviving legitimate heir.
White Ship disaster: The 1120 sinking of a ship carrying William Adelin and other members of the Anglo-Norman elite. The catastrophe destroyed Henry’s only legitimate son and transformed the succession.
Treaty of Alton: The 1101 agreement in which Robert Curthose accepted Henry I’s rule in England. It temporarily settled the brothers’ competing claims after Robert’s invasion of England.
